Our Highlander’s stereo system has decided it is going to reboot itself every ten seconds or so.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I have discovered that the issue is (at least in my case) my iPhone’s fault.
Our Highlander is a 2019 Limited. I have an iPhone XS, as does my wife. We both recently updated to iOS 13.1.2 and that’s when the rebooting radio started in the car.
Updating to iOS 13.1.3, which was just released, didn’t help. The dealership reset the radio today, which deleted both paired iPhones. I drove the whole way home (20 minutes) and the radio didn’t act up once. Previously, it was rebooting every ten seconds.
I got home and connected my phone and the system immediately went into its fits of rebooting.
I guess we will have to have no phones paired to the car until the next iOS update? Ugh.
I plan to dive more into the settings (if I can get to them before the next system reboot) and see if there’s any changes that can be made.
Apple fail. And that’s coming from someone who likes his iPhone just fine. No, I don’t want an Android. I just want back to iOS 12.
This isn’t a definitive answer, though , as some Highlander owners have reported system rebooting even with Android phones being paired.
In other news, we had the Highlander professionally detailed and ceramic coated today and it looks AMAZING. Now, to just get those two front windows tinted.

I’m pretty sure that if a Bluetooth connection can kill your headunit, that’s the headunit’s fault, regardless of whether Apple is doing something out of spec.

Toyota Entune is not good. Everyone knows that. But at least, in this case, we don’t have a bad headunit. Something in the iOS 13 code is not jiving well with Entune.

It’s not just with Toyotas. Apple software has been doing this for years off and on on various makes. If you connect with a cable, try using a new cable; sometimes they just get shorted internally.

As dumb as it sounds, there is a difference between and Apple or good cable and a 5$ gas station one. When my volt was getting in getting the oil changed, I was talking to one of the folks and 1/2 of CarPlay issues were due to cheap cables.

Try syncing up with a certified Apple cable.

You know if you bought a vehicle you were proud to drive you would n’t have to hide yourself behind tinted windows right?
;)
Radio issues suck! How you liking it other than the radio issue?

It’s wonderful. We really like it. I like driving it. So smooth and just well built. Very solid all around. I can’t wait to get a small camper to pull behind it next spring.

Yeah it's absolutely true. Same goes for non-carplay connectivity issues. At least half. Sometimes people beat the cables up real bad to the point there are bare wires showing, then wonder why things aren't working properly.

What if the same is happens across multiple makes with the only common factor being Apple? Because it does and has been on and off for years.

If the Bluetooth doesn’t work that’s one thing. But if it’s crashing the head unit, that’s a sign that the head unit is garbage. You have to design stuff to handle crappy inputs. Even more so for radios. Honestly if I were a security researcher, I’d be interested because often if you make something crash with a bad input, a maliciously crafted input can let you take control.

I get what you're saying, and automotive head units are generally behind on tech. But this has been an issue on multiple makes with Apple products for as long as I've been doing warranty repairs. Apple is the common denominator and more at fault than bad head units. The problem usually manifests after Apple releases a new OS or new phone, then lasts until they fix the software. They should be able to make a product that works with slightly older head units. This is on Apple.

Yeah, not saying it’s not. Just saying that if your machine crashes because of an unexpected signal that’s also a problem.
